Erik ten Hag presided over his best performance as Manchester United manager as the team defeated Tottenham 2-0.

United were the superior side from start to finish and had 28 shots to Tottenham’s nine.

United won through two second half goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes, and the win should have been by a higher margin.

This was a better all round performance than United’s other big victories this season against Liverpool and Arsenal which had seen the team come under pressure for spells.

Against Tottenham, United had complete control from the kick-off and thoroughly deserved all three points.

Ten Hag shares two key messages

Erik ten Hag told reporters that he had two key messages he shared with his players at full-time.

Speaking at a press conference reported by Sky Sports, Ten Hag explained that he wanted Manchester United’s players to appreciate how good they were.

The manager said: “We had some more really good performances like Liverpool and Arsenal but this was the game from start to the end we were really good and I told the team it was very enjoyable to watch.”

Ten Hag was also keen not to be self-congratulatory for too long, and wanted to impress on his team that they must very quickly refocus on the Chelsea game this Saturday night.

He told the club website: “I think this team has confidence. It’s about getting ready for that Chelsea game. It’s also what I just told in the dressing room to the lads.

“Get ready as a team, as a player, it’s about recovery, about sleep, about food. Get ready for the next game and then, once again, we need that same performance.

“We have to deliver every day, live every day to the maximum. Live every day accounting to high standards. When you do this, you develop as a team and come on the good side of the process. I’m happy for today and already looking forward to Saturday, as it’s another big match.”

Ten Hag had separately explained that he will ‘deal with’ the Cristiano Ronaldo situation, with the player walking off down the tunnel before full-time.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute, and United didn’t need him. It’s very possible Ten Hag will go with the same starting XI against Chelsea this weekend too.
