Erik ten Hag has called two players into the Manchester United first team tour squad.

The manager confirmed both Jonny Evans and Joe Hugill have been promoted to join the senior squad after the Wrexham game.

Dan Gore, Hannibal, and Alvaro Fernandez are all already in the main squad, and they just dropped down to get some extra minutes.

The rest of the players who travelled to San Diego for the Wrexham game have returned to the UK, with Will Fish already clinching his loan move to Hibernian.

Ten Hag explains decision

Erik ten Hag explained his decision to promote the duo. He said Manchester United need the numbers, having already lost Anthony Elanga, who has been sold to Nottingham Forest.

The manager told the club website: “We need the numbers in the coming days in training

“As you see, Fred is not here and also [Anthony] Elanga went back. We need the numbers for proper training to hit our targets and that’s the reason they are here.”

Fred stayed in the UK for personal issues and has not joined up with the squad. Turkish outlet Fanatik report Galatasaray are trying to buy him.

Evans and Hugill deserve opportunities

Jonny Evans signed up with Manchester United on a very short-term deal to contribute against Lyon and Wrexham.

He will now get a further chance to try and impress Erik ten Hag and earn a longer term contract. Manchester United could consider him if Harry Maguire is sold.

Joe Hugill was particularly unlucky not to make the main tour squad after impressing in the opening two games including scoring in the win over Leeds.

Considering United’s need for a striker, he will be desperate to get minutes against Borussia Dortmund next week and get on the scoresheet again.

He and Evans are just in training for numbers-purposes, at the moment. But if they impress, Ten Hag could hand them game time.
