Teddy Sheringham says Man Utd could make a managerial decision that would really disappoint him

Teddy Sheringham is the latest former player to weigh in on the Manchester United head coach debate, with a firm backing for Michael Carrick to remain in charge.

Manchester United are five games away from finishing the 2025/26 campaign. In January, when Ruben Amorim was dismissed, no one thought this team would be pushing for a Champions League spot, with Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Michael Carrick’s appointment led to an impressive run of results, but United can step closer to their main objective of Champions League qualification by beating Brentford on Monday night.

Every positive result strengthens Carrick’s case for the job at this stage.

Teddy Sheringham would be disappointed if Man Utd overlooked Michael Carrick

With Carrick making such a strong case for the job, the list of realistic candidates is short.

There are risks with Julian Nagelsmann, as there is with every potential candidate, but Carrick’s work to date at United is hard to ignore.

That is why former United striker Teddy Sheringham says he would be disappointed if Carrick was overlooked for the job at the end of the season.

“Michael’s gone in there, Michael Carrick’s gone in there, he’s done an unbelievable job,” Sheringham told talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs Daily show.

“And it just shows you what can be done if you’ve got the right approach, if you get on the right wavelength with players, things turn around very, very quickly. So he’s gone in there, he’s had that reaction from him, and they’ve gone on from there.

“So, I’d be very disappointed in Man United if they didn’t give Michael Carrick the job. I think he’s been fantastic since he’s gone in there.”

Even if Carrick doesn’t get the job, which would be a surprise, the 44-year-old has done his reputation no harm as a coach.

Teddy Sheringham’s stint in management

In May 2015, Sheringham earned his first managerial role, taking charge of League Two side Stevenage.

Sheringham registered himself as a player due to an injury crisis, despite being 49 at the time. The bottom line is he never actually played and was sacked at the beginning of February with the team 19th in the league.

In 2017, Sheringham returned to management, named the new head coach of Indian Super League club ATK.

ATK won three of their 10 matches under Sheringham.
