Anthony Elanga was given the second start of his Sweden international career last night in a friendly victory against Mexico.
Sweden won the game 2-1 against the World Cup bound Mexicans. The Scandanavian country meanwhile failed to qualify for the tournament.
The match was the eighth appearance of Elanga’s Sweden career, but he has most frequently been used as a substitute.
This game was an opportunity for Elanga to break his goal drought. His last strike came for Sweden against Norway in May, his one international goal.
His last strike for Manchester United came against Atletico Madrid way back in February.
Elanga did not find the net in this victory, with Mattias Svanberg and Marcus Rohden on the scoresheet.
The Manchester United youngster was substituted in the 69th minute, without attempting a shot.
There were still positive words for his performance from Swedish outlet Fotbol Skanalen, even though they rated Elanga as a 2/5.
Their summary read: “Came close to getting a nice assist in the first half when he dribbled his way into Mexico’s penalty area, putting Svanberg in a giant position.
“Had some good actions with the ball, but threatened not enough.”
Victor Lindelof praised
Manchester United teammate Victor Lindelof captained the side and played all 90 minutes, completing 96 per cent of his passes.
The centre-back received a more positive rating, a 3/5, the highest of any player.
Fotbol Skanalen wrote: “The team captain was always in the right place. Determined in the duels and tried to take the ball forward in the field when the opportunity arose.”
Sweden face Algeria on Saturday night in a friendly. Afterwards Lindelof is set to fly to Gambia on a charity mission for Unicef.
