Andre Onana knew the moment Leroy Sane’s shot slipped through his hand that it was an awful error.
Not quite Massimo Taibi level bad, but David de Gea in the FA Cup final bad. And that was bad enough to cost him his long United career.
Onana is just getting started, and cost a big fee. He will retain the faith of manager Erik ten Hag, who said after the game he was impressed with the way Onana had fronted up to his error.
On the pitch it looked a little different. Onana looked shellshocked, disconsolate, recognising that his error would likely cost his team.

United stars embrace Onana
Manchester United players made a beeline for Andre Onana at the final whistle, and the goalkeeper looked stunned, and not in a good way.
The Cameroon international seemed low, taking it all in, and United’s players led by Casemiro and Marcus Rashford made their way towards him to attempt to lift his spirits.
United lost the game 4-3, and Onana made some important saves to prevent Bayern’s score being higher, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui also made a point of going over to Andre Onana at full-time to console him.
Mazraoui, an unused substitute, played alongside Onana under Erik ten Hag at Ajax.
Onana will get support from the Manchester United coaching staff, but the only way to really fix this is to get out on the pitch and start keeping clean sheets.
He has not had one since the opening game of the season against Wolves. And United’s injury-struck defeat has not made it easy for him. The team must pull together and start being more resilient, starting away at Burnley this weekend.
