Andre Onana speaks out on his mistake following calamitous error in Man United defeat

Andre Onana has come under severe criticism following the 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

The Cameroonian international was hugely at fault for the first goal scored by the German side and from then on, United never really got back into the game and suffered as a result.

The confidence seemed to be zapped from the team as soon as the ball wriggled through Onana’s fingertips but, apart from that mistake, the goalkeeper seemed quite composed on the ball and made a few fantastic saves.

Ultimately, and probably rightly so, the overriding memory from that performance will be the mistake that kickstarted the night for the Germans.

Onana on mistake

Speaking to TNT Sport after the game, Onana was very critical of his own performance and owned up to the mistake made for the first goal.

“It’s difficult. I think in the beginning we were good but after my mistake, we lost control of the game. I’m the one who let the team down,” Onana said.

“I have a lot to prove, because to be honest my start in Manchester is not so good, it is not how it want [it to be].”

Onana’s character

Despite the error that was made by the goalkeeper, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper owned up to his mistake and was keen to put the blame on himself and face the media after a tough season.

That character, despite the mistake, will be exactly what is needed for the goalkeeper to make up for these mistakes and improve after a poor start to the season.

Onana as mentioned, generally looked comfortable before and after the mistake. He will need a cool head and confidence in his own abilities to be able to get back to his best when United take on Vincent Kompany’s Burnley this Saturday.
