Ruben Amorim has been sparingly using Martinez in recent weeks for his side after the United centre-back made his long-awaited return from a knee injury.
However, the 40-year-old United manager dropped Leny Yoro to the bench for the Boxing Day match and brought Martinez into the backline for the 1-0 win.

Man Utd have beaten Newcastle 1-0 – What is your INSTANT REACTION?
What did you think of Ruben Amorim's new system?
“No, I don’t want to say that because if we don’t have more points, it’s because of the team, not because of a specific player,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“I think he is a guy with a lot of character. He’s really good on the ball and that came with the quality that he has.
“He played [in the] World Cup, he won [the] World Cup. He’s used to that stress and he showed today that he’s a top player.
“And sometimes people talk about the way he defends the box because he’s a small guy, but today he did really well against a team that just has tall players.”
Ruben Amorim’s feelings on Patrick Dorgu’s performance for Man Utd in the 1-0 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford
Patrick Dorgu ensured that the Red Devils walked away with all three Premier League points after the 21-year-old netted a stunning volley in the first half.
Amorim has been critical of Patrick Dorgu in recent weeks, but the United head coach admitted the defender took “more risk” in the Newcastle match on Friday.

“It’s the normal life of a player,” he said at his post-match press conference.
“Sometimes you are in [a] good moment, sometimes you struggle. Sometimes [it] depends on the team or the game.
“Maybe the game today, with a lot of transitions, is good for his pace, for his ability to drive the ball.
“He played one position [where] he can take more risk, that can help also a player like him to not feel that responsibility all the time. So, I think he did well.”
United are fifth in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are level on points with sixth-place Liverpool and fifth-place Chelsea after the Newcastle result.
