Michael Carrick is in talks to finalise his appointment as permanent Manchester United head coach.
This week started with reports that Andoni Iraola is out of contention for the Manchester United job, which solidified Michael Carrick’s position as favourite.
Now, The Athletic are reporting that club chiefs will recommend Carrick to Sir Jim Ratcliffe for the permanent head coach role after he lost just two of his first 15 games in charge.
Michael Carrick’s appointment could even be made official before the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest. But now attention turns towards the details of Carrick’s contract.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe should give Michael Carrick three years
When Ruben Amorim was in charge of United, co-owner Ratcliffe publicly backed the Portuguese head coach.
Ratcliffe claimed Amorim deserved three years in the job to prove himself. Of course, Amorim was sacked a few months later because of a fallout with club chiefs.
But Ratcliffe’s intentions were clear – to give a head coach time. While Carrick has somewhat stumbled into the job on the back of a solid interim spell, Ineos must stick to their word.
Giving Carrick a shorter contract would undermine his authority and signal to both players and fans that he is still a temporary fix and a short-term solution.
When Carrick’s appointment is confirmed, expect a three-year deal, similar to the one given to Amorim before him.

Michael Carrick could lead 2028 title charge
A three-year contract for Carrick, as I predict, would mean he would take charge at Old Trafford until 2029.
Ineos’ ‘Project 150’ aims to win the Premier League title by the club’s 150th anniversary in 2028 – within Carrick’s contract period.
While there has been push-back over Carrick’s appointment from fans and pundits, it is widely accepted that there are very few other options on the market.

United need to back Carrick fully and stick to their project. This season, Carrick has outclassed elite managers and won more points since his appointment than any other Premier League club.
That indicates he can lead a title charge.
