Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has now admitted that one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s missed transfer targets played a key part in sending him into retirement.

One of Manchester United’s best midfielders of all time, Paul Scholes spent his entire club playing career under iconic former manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Scholes was one of United’s famed ‘Class of ‘92’ success stories and climbed out of the youth academy in the 1990s and established himself in the first-team squad.

The 50-year-old former United and England midfielder lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

Scholes made the initial decision to call it time on his legendary playing career after United lifted the Premier League title under Ferguson in the 2010-11 campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson missed out on Gareth Bale and Paul Scholes felt what the former Man Utd target was capable of

Paul Scholes walked back on his retirement in 2012 and the Manchester United legend made his sensational return to Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Gareth Bale found major success during his time at Tottenham and Ferguson even tried to sign the 36-year-old Welsh ex-winger when he emerged at Southampton.

“We tried to sign him from [Southampton] as a 17-year-old,” Ferguson said, as per The Guardian in 2011.

“But it never got to the stage of talking to the player. They didn’t accept our offer and I think they must have alerted Tottenham.”

Scholes appeared on the Stick to Football podcast and the former Red Devils talent admitted that Gareth Bale blew him away when he played against him at Spurs.

“No, I was all right for the first few months [returning from retirement], I was saying it was the year after,” he said on The Overlap.

“I remember we played Tottenham at home. I didn’t play badly, but physically, I just felt, ‘Oh, f— it. When you know you’re not.’

“I was watching like Gareth Bale run past three or four of us. Look, he had done that to me when I was 21, but it just felt different.”

What Gareth Bale did at Tottenham showed why Man Utd icon Paul Scholes wanted to retire again

United were linked with Gareth Bale again amid Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 ahead of Real Madrid’s £85.3m blockbuster transfer for the former Tottenham ace.

Scholes admitted that his encounter with the former Real Madrid and Wales winger was the moment that he knew the writing was on the wall for his United career.

“Get me f—— disc out, go for it,” he added.

“I couldn’t even get close, I couldn’t get close enough to even kick him, to even bring him down. I remember the hefty, remember the big boots you used to have?”

Reacting to Scholes, Gary Neville suggested: “Oh, yeah, the compression boots?”

Scholes then continued: “I was in that for about three days. I reckon that was the third game of the season, and I wanted to retire again but I can’t go to see him [Ferguson].

“I was in an ice bath for two days with them f—— boots on.”

Scholes ended his Red Devils career for the second – and final – time after United lifted their last Premier League title under Ferguson in the 2012-13 campaign.
