Roma has sacked former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

On Tuesday morning, Roma confirmed that Mourinho would be parting ways with the Italian side after two and a half years at the club.

The Serie A giants currently sit ninth in the table following defeat to AC Milan at the weekend, which has led to the curtain being drawn on the legendary managers‘ time in Rome.

It seems a very long time since he was at Manchester United.

Who Sir Alex Ferguson told Jose Mourinho to sign at Manchester United

Mourinho was appointed Manchester United manager in May 2016. Ultimately, his tenure was a success at Old Trafford. Mourinho led United to an FA Cup and a Europa League title.

He also brought in some fantastic players at the time. The likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Nemanja Matic were all acquired.

He had a tough job trying to live up to Sir Alex Ferguson‘s legacy and ultimately it ended in a sacking for Mourinho at Old Trafford, despite the trophies.

Ferguson let Jose do his own thing whilst at Carrington, however, there was one time Sir Alex told the Portuguese manager a player to sign at United.

Usually, when the Scotsman gives a recommendation, you listen. But this time, Mourinho refused.

Sir Alex Ferguson told Jose Mourinho to sign Dele Alli

In a clip from Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ series at Tottenham which was filmed in 2019, Mourinho was seen complaining to Spurs’ owner Daniel Levy about Alli.

“I told already Dele very directly that he doesn’t train well, he is not a good trainer,” Mourinho said. “I am not saying a disaster, but I am not saying Harry Kane. Harry Kane is a very good trainer.”

Mourinho added: “Sir Alex Ferguson gave me only one bit of advice in two and a half years. Buy Dele Alli.

“That guy, with that mentality, the way he plays, the aggression he has in mind. This guy is a Manchester United player. Buy Dele Alli.

“And he [Ferguson] has an eye for a player. But he [Alli] is not a good trainer, we need to find motivation for the guy.”

Mourinho may have got one up on the Manchester United legend here.

Fast forward to the present day, Alli is currently at Everton in the Premier League, but has only played 13 games since 2022 for the Toffees and is currently out with a hip injury.

He did have a stint in Turkey with Besiktas, but this was also massively unsuccessful. He also played 13 times. Jose Mourinho was maybe right to ignore Fergie this time around.
