Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson would ensure that he would do one thing “every” time before a match at Old Trafford.

Ferguson’s 26-year reign at United came to an end in 2013 after he led the Red Devils to their last Premier League title, with the Scotsman subsequently retiring.

The 82-year-old Scot has remained a vigilant figure at Old Trafford even after his retirement and has often been spotted in the stands watching United in action.

Ferguson was in attendance at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday as United were held to a 2-2 draw against Tottenham, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe sitting alongside him.

Following his retirement from football, the United legend has opened up on his time at Old Trafford and even named the three most underrated players he managed.

Ferguson revealed four players he wished he managed in his career, with the former United boss sharing his regret over missing out on one legendary ex-footballer.

During his career at Old Trafford, however, Ferguson committed to one thing when the Red Devils played at home and it “became a superstition.”

What United legend Ferguson did at Old Trafford

During Ferguson’s era at United, an all-too-familiar sight at Old Trafford became the legendary Sikh supporters who sat behind him for matches.

According to ABP News in 2021, the identities of the Sikh supporters were Satta Singh, Jimmy Singh, Kuk Singh, Simon Singh and Craig Singh.

Following Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, the Singh family were no longer spotted in their usual seats behind the manager and fans wondered what happened to them.

The aptly named ‘Singh Brothers’ sporadically appeared on live TV in different seats, with the iconic supporters seen during United’s 5-1 home win over Leeds in 2021.

Speaking in a video for Virgin Money (via Facebook), two members of the Singh family opened up on their relationship with Ferguson when he was United manager.

According to Singh family members Satta and Jimmy, Ferguson would come over to them and shake their hands “every” time before United played at Old Trafford.

“At the beginning of the game, when Fergie used to come out, every game he used to come and shake our hands,” Satta said.

“And he would always ask us how we are.”

Jimmy added: “It became a superstition. Honestly, he would do it every game.”

Singh family’s connection to United

The Singh family’s affinity with the Premier League club dates back many, many decades, with Kuk being a United fan since 1968.

Satta and Jimmy revealed that one of their most special memories was their trip to see United win the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea.

The Singh family members claimed they drove to the final in Moscow and drove back, with Satta saying that being a United fan is like a “second religion” to them.

Speaking on his experience of being a United fan, Satta said: “My love for Man United began when I was 14 years old.

“I remember them singing the songs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-0 and, you know, that still rings in my ears today, you know.”

Jimmy added: “At Old Trafford, you get the feeling that you just don’t get anywhere else.

“It’s just a one-off, and every time you come here you feel the same way.”
