Sir Alex Ferguson names position where Manchester United need new signing

Sir Alex Ferguson was a happy man as Manchester United won the Carabao Cup at Wembley at the weekend.

Erik ten Hag followed in his footsteps by beating Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley, just like Fergie did in the FA Cup in 1999.

It took Sir Alex four years to win his first trophy, with Erik ten Hag winning silverware at his first attempt.

While the squad Ten Hag has inherited is far more talented than the one Ferguson took over back in 1986, the Scotsman has identified an area where it requires improvement.

Sir Alex Ferguson on new signings

Sir Alex Ferguson spoke highly of top goalscorer Marcus Rashford, who netted his 25th of the season in the Carabao Cup final, his first for the club at Wembley.

But the legendary gaffer says too much is being demanded of Rashford right now, with a regular goalscorer required.

He told Sky Sports: “I don’t think he’s a striker. He operates from the left hand side, he’s fantastic. His finishing is always good, always keeps his shots down, which is really important for a striker, he’s on a great vein of form.

“Unfortunately for us he’s the main source of goals, we could do with an extra one, you know, but he’s doing it.”

Ferguson is spot on with his comments, that Marcus Rashford deserves praise for his goalscoring form this season.

Nobody else is anywhere near him, with Rashford the only player into double figures. Bruno Fernandes is closest with seven goals and Anthony Martial with six.

Last season Cristiano Ronaldo scored 24, he has since left the club after netting only three times before the World Cup.

Erik ten Hag has identified striker as an area United need to recruit, with Wout Weghorst signed as a stop-gap on loan in January.

While he could re-sign as a squad player, United require a more prolific solution. ESPN report both Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are big name targets the club could pursue in the summer.

Ten Hag and Ferguson were spotted embracing at Wembley after the game, after meeting for dinner earlier in the week. The need for a new striker is likely to have been among their topics of discussion.
