Sir Alex Ferguson dropped ’15-minute rant’ on football legend and ‘destroyed’ him after he was called out for not signing him

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hilariously didn’t hold back after he was told that he “didn’t half recover” from a “mistake” that he made.

Sir Alex Ferguson kickstarted his legendary managerial career with East Stirlingshire before signing for fellow Scottish side St Mirren.

The 83-year-old Scotsman lifted a Scottish First Division title with St Mirren before he was axed by the club, with Ferguson then moving to Aberdeen.

Ferguson made a real name for himself with Aberdeen by lifting three Scottish Premier Division titles, four Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup.

The Manchester United legend also defied the odds and led Aberdeen to the European Cup Winners’ Cup with a famous win over Real Madrid in 1983.

Following his sustained success with Aberdeen in the 1970s and 1980s, Ferguson left Scotland and made his move to England to become the United manager in 1986.

Ferguson, much like his time at Aberdeen, enjoyed incredible success at Old Trafford and carved out another defining chapter in his legendary managerial career.

The iconic Scot led United to all 13 of their Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies, including capturing a continental treble with the Red Devils in 1999.

Ferguson didn’t sign one Rangers legend

Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired from management in 2013, made the big decision to not sign one former player during his spell at St Mirren in Scotland.

Ally McCoist played for Fir Park Boys Club at youth level and had been linked with St Mirren at the start of his career, only for Ferguson to snub the Scotsman.

The 62-year-old would sign for St Johnstone at the beginning of his professional career before moving to Sunderland and then later signing for Rangers.

Ally McCoist had a legendary spell with Rangers and the ex-Scotland striker lifted 10 Scottish Premier Division titles, a Scottish Cup and nine Scottish League Cups.

The Rangers legend has had a close relationship with Ferguson and admitted that he learned a lot from the former Manchester United manager’s decision to not sign him.

“I took that message with me so much that I used to say the same to boys I released when I was manager of Rangers,” McCoist told FourFourTwo magazine.

“That was the most unpleasant part of the job by a country mile, having to sit across the table from a young fella and say, ‘We’re not offering you a contract.’

“I would echo Fergie: ‘Wherever you go, nothing will give me more satisfaction than if you come back and prove me wrong.’”

McCoist’s cheeky swipe at Ferguson

Ally McCoist captured two European Golden Shoes during his remarkable spell at the Ibrox before he left in 1998 and saw out the rest of his career with Kilmarnock.

The former Rangers manager linked up with Ferguson ahead of Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign and McCoist couldn’t help but tease the United legend.

McCoist reminded Ferguson of his decision not to sign him when he was at St Mirren and the former Aberdeen boss pulled no punches towards his fellow Scot.

McCoist told FourFourTwo: “Before Scotland’s Euro 2024 opener against Germany this summer, I was at this big charity dinner with Fergie – another party before the tournament started, as usual!

“I was interviewing him and said, ‘Gaffer, when you first started out as a manager, you went to St Mirren and failed to sign a future double European Golden Boot winner – but to be fair to you, you didn’t half recover from that mistake!’

“He then went into a 15-minute rant where he destroyed me! He handled his career very well and I don’t think it would have diverted too much if he’d signed me at St Mirren – I think he’d have probably got over that as well!”
