Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken out after Manchester United’s Carabao Cup final success to commend the job Erik ten Hag is doing at the club.

Ten Hag has turned United’s fortunes around after a worst ever Premier League season in 2021/22 before he took over.

Now after just a few months, Ten Hag has won his first trophy, with Manchester United beating Newcastle 2-0 in the final at Wembley.

Ferguson was at Wembley to watch the victory and met Ten Hag in the tunnel to congratulate him after the trophy had been presented.

Sir Alex gives view on Ten Hag

Sir Alex Ferguson spoke to Sky Sports at Wembley and talked up the job Erik ten Hag is doing at Manchester United, expressing his satisfaction at seeing the Red Devils winning again.

He highlighted Ten Hag’s player recruitment, and the coaching staff he has surrounded himself with.

Ferguson highlighted Steve McClaren, who was his own assistant manager back in 1999 when United won the Treble.

He said: “He’s gone the right way about it. His signings have been really good, I think that was important.

“He’s got a grip of the club, which was really really big for him. I think for Erik, he’s got Steve McClaren, Steve was here with us for a few years, so that experience helps, I think Steve will play a big part in that.”

McClaren was hired as part of the coaching staff along with Ten Hag’s former Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag.

It was a sensible fit, with Ten Hag working under McClaren at AZ Alkmaar 15 years ago.

This previously established working relationship combined with McClaren’s knowledge of Manchester United and the Premier League will have helped the Dutchman hugely.

McClaren has kept a low profile, just the way he will like it. Sir Alex Ferguson knows about the wisdom he can bring, and Ten Hag is clearly benefitting.
