Former Manchester United assistant coach Mike Phelan has congratulated Erik ten Hag on winning his first trophy at the club.
Ten Hag’s United beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.
Phelan left United’s coaching staff last July when Ten Hag took over. He is happy to see the Dutchman do well, sending a message on social media.
He watched the match from a bar in Canada with United supporters, and sent a message of congratulations via Twitter, adding: “The first one is always the hardest.”
Phelan was a former United player under Sir Alex Ferguson, before later going on to become his assistant.
More recently he worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who could not manage to get ‘the first one’, losing the Europa League final and four cup semi-finals.
Ten Hag poses with Sir Alex
Erik ten Hag spent time after the game with legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Scotsman was at Wembley to watch the final and was waiting in the tunnel after the game to congratulate the current boss.
The pair posed together afterwards with the Carabao Cup trophy.

Ten Hag enjoyed dinner with Sir Alex Ferguson last week and said the former boss had given him some valuable advice.
He has followed this up with a win against Barcelona and a victory at Wembley, making it a real week to remember.
