Simon Jordan singles out Manchester United ace who impressed him vs Galatasaray

Scott McTominay was singled out for praise by one-time Premier League chairman Simon Jordan after scoring in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday afternoon.

It is a question which continues to divide the Manchester United supporters.

Does the goal threat Scott McTominay offers when fielded in the centre of the park offset his lack of qualities elsewhere? His tendency to go missing in the build-up. His apparent inability to stamp his authority on proceedings, or an unhelpful penchant for giving away penalty kicks?

McTominay’s performance in that six-goal Champions League thriller in Istanbul was the Scotland international to a tee. He scored with a fine finish after a flowing Red Devils move. But you’d struggle to recall anything else he did on the night.

Scott McTominay divides Manchester United fans

Still, former Crystal Palace chief turned talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan is coming out fighting in McTominay’s corner, arguing that the Carrington graduate at least offers ‘progress’ in a United side who continue to take one step forward followed by two back in the other direction.

“One player who seems to be going (strong) seems to be Scott McTominay,” Jordan argues (30 November, 10am). “There’s progress there.

“But this is not a top United side.”

With four goals in all competitions – 11 for club and country – McTominay is the second-highest scorer in the United squad at present. Only Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund (five each) have more than him in 2023/24.

Champions League disaster

“We have to wait and see (if we can stay in Europe),” McTominay told the PA news agency after United threw away a two-goal lead twice away at Galatasaray, leaving their Champions Leauge hopes all-but dead.

“It’s not in our hands. We’ve put ourselves in that position. We have to own it and that’s football. We kept our cool really well, I felt, throughout large portions of the game.

“Obviously towards the end it gets a little bit like a basketball game where everyone’s up and down and some tired legs and stuff like that.

“We need to rest, recover and there’s is a big game coming up on Saturday, which we will be ready for as well.”
