Simon Jordan argues Erik ten Hag signing has ‘brought nothing’ to Man Utd and has been ‘poor’ in ‘everything’

TalkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan has pulled no punches towards one “poor” Manchester United star who was brought to Old Trafford under manager Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag has seen Manchester United bounce back after the September international break with two wins in two matches across all competitions.

United returned to winning ways on Saturday after a well-deserved 3-0 Premier League win over 10-man Southampton at the St Mary’s.

Ten Hag’s men continued to build momentum on Tuesday evening with the start of their Carabao Cup campaign for the 2024-25 season.

United thrashed League One side Barnsley 7-0 at Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with the Red Devils now progressing to the fourth round.

Jordan critical of Man Utd star

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Simon Jordan ruthlessly criticised struggling Manchester United winger Antony over his time at Old Trafford.

Antony played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax before United agreed an eye-watering deal to bring the Brazilian attacker to the Premier League club.

United splashed a hefty initial fee of £82m to sign Antony from Ajax, with the Brazil international failing to make an impact at Old Trafford.

Antony ended the 2023-24 campaign by scoring only three times and registering two assists in 38 appearances across all competitions.

Jordan has now claimed that the 24-year-old United winger has “brought nothing” to the Red Devils and “everything about him has been poor” so far.

“Of course, there is a pressure and, of course, there is an expectation because if you spend big money on players, naturally you expect big outcomes,” he said.

“If a £25m footballer doesn’t succeed, there’s less noise around it. In this instance, with Antony, at £25m, he would have been a bad buy because he’s been poor and everything about him has been poor.

“He’s brought nothing. What has he brought to Manchester United beside headlines? Certainly nothing on the football field.

“So, at £25m, you would be saying it’s a waste of money, at £85m, you’ve got to look at the manager and ask why he bought him, especially as he knew him.”

Antony fights back at Man Utd

Antony now faces even more competition for a place in the United XI, with Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho ahead of him in the pecking order.

The former Ajax star has only made a very brief cameo in the Premier League this season after he came off the bench in the 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex.

However, Ten Hag started Antony in the 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup and the United winger produced a solid display at Old Trafford.

Antony scored for the first time this season after he stepped up for a penalty in the first half, with Marcus Rashford allowing the United star to take the spot-kick.

“They are very ambitious, very hungry,” Ten Hag said at his post-match press conference.

“But they also give each other the ball, they want to give assists and give each other the opportunity to score a goal like with the penalty.

“Antony needs some confidence, then Rashy gives the pen to Antony, which is good for the team when they are together.”
