Sevilla chief says Anthony Martial negotiations began in early December

Sevilla tied up a deal to sign Anthony Martial at the end of January on a loan deal.

The Spanish club were delighted to bring him in and Martial could make his debut this Saturday against Osasuna.

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has been shedding light on the details of the deal and why Sevilla were so pleased to get it done.

Monchi explained that Sevilla actually began negotiating for Martial at the start of December.

He told AS: “It shows the ambition of the club. Sevilla is a well-known brand in the world of football. The negotiation starts at the beginning of December. And we soon realized that there was something.

“If you pick up the phone and the agent of the the player says “I’m going to Seville”… I thank United because they have been respectful in defending what is theirs.

“The player wanted to come, we have had competition at the level of very big names, but the player’s conversations with the coach have been very important.”

The timing of this ties up with Martial’s agent’s comments to Sky Sports on December 14 and said he wanted to leave the club.

Martial had featured in United’s first training session under Ralf Rangnick before getting injured and missing the rest of the month.

What is clear, is that Martial’s head was not at Manchester United in December or January as talk over his future swirled.

On December 28, Sky Sports reported Sevilla had an initial loan offer for Martial rejected by United.

A month later on January 26 a deal was finally struck and Martial made his move. Now he has got the loan switch he wanted, he has to make it work.
