Seven ridiculous things that have happened since Manchester United last played away in the English cups

Manchester United have been drawn at home in the cup once again, as they face Newcastle United in the fourth round.

Remarkably, this is United’s 12th consecutive home draw in a row in cup competitions, which is a new record set by an English club.

This means that the last time United played an away fixture in an English cup was at Leicester City back on the 21st of March 2021.

A LOT has happened since then – so with this, here are seven things that have happened since Manchester United last played away in one of the English cups.

Manchester United resigned and sold Cristiano Ronaldo

On the 31st of August 2021 – Cristiano Ronaldo came home to Old Trafford.

In arguably one of the most exciting transfer stories ever, the Portuguese footballing Icon came back to his former club from Juventus in the summer of 2021.

But the fairytale didn’t exactly go according to script. He was subject to a disagreement with Erik ten Hag and was shipped out in January of 2023.

United spend £486m

Yep, since our last away cup game – United have spent a monumental £486m in transfer windows.

The likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Casemiro were all brought in – along with the rest to create a simply ludicrous total.

Naturally, many players left such as Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and David de Gea, but the amount accrued back is simply nowhere near what we’ve spent.

The European Super League scandal

Manchester United were also directly involved in the European Super League scandal.

It was a conceptual breakaway tournament involving 12 of the most popular football clubs in Europe. It came at a time when the participant clubs felt a lot of instability in existing European football economic models.

With an intention to bring about stability as well as intensity for the improvement of the continent’s footballing competitions.

Fans reacted terribly to this – and rightly so. However, I think we all remember how close it was to happening. Never forget!

Christian Eriksen had a cardiac arrest and then signed for United

Christian Eriksen literally retired from football thanks to a cardiac arrest, came back to the Premier League and then earned a move to Manchester United.

It was on 12 June 2021, in the 42nd minute of Denmark’s game against Finland when Eriksen collapsed on the pitch – leaving the footballing world in a state of utter sorrow.

Thankfully, he made a full recovery and has gone from strength to strength since.

Mason Greenwood’s entire case

Another scandal came and went – this time with Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood was first arrested in January 2022 and actually suspended from the club later that month. Since then all charges have been dropped, but United also had a decision to make.

Only very recently did the club decide to part ways for good with the forward. He’s currently on loan to Getafe in La Liga.

Madly enough, he was also the only goalscorer in the last away defeat to Leicester. Seems worlds away now.

Manchester United have had four different managers

Since 2021, United have had four different names at the helm of the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge during the Leicester defeat. He was sacked not long later at the beginning of November 2021, following an embarrassing defeat to Watford.

Then Michael Carrick had a turn as caretaker – before Ralf Rangnick came in at the end of November.

Obviously, we know now his successor was Erik ten Hag, who still remains in the job.

The world went back to normal

We’ve saved the most baffling for last – the whole world went back to normal.

The last time United played an away cup fixture, there were still no crowds. Fans only made a full return to stadiums on July 19th 2021 – following the Covid-19 epidemic.
