Manchester United exacted a measure of revenge over Barcelona for past meeting as the Red Devils won 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Sergio Busquets was the only remaining player on both teams from the 2011 Champions League final.

He returned to the Barcelona side after missing the first leg through injury. Busquets was unhappy to end up on the losing side.

The midfielder told Sport: “We are angry, because we wanted to continue, but the team is aware of where it comes from and the process that must be carried out.”

Busquets picks out key moment

Busquets was shown a yellow card for a foul late on when he hauled back Alejandro Garnacho to prevent a counter attack.

The midfielder picked out a different moment as being key to the outcome of the tie, noting the point blank save David de Gea made from Fred.

He said: “With the score against us we tried and we had a couple of chances, like one from Kounde that De Gea broke up with a good hand. It was a pity.”

United scored twice in the second half to overturn Robert Lewandowski’s first half penalty.

Fred netted right after half-time to throw Barcelona’s game plan off course, with Antony going on to score a winner.

The real reason United won was Erik ten Hag’s managerial changes. The Dutchman made a switch in attack at half-time, bring Bruno Fernandes back into the centre, bringing Antony on for Wout Weghorst.

It was a decisive switch, with the manager recognising there was no time to waste, and his changes impacted the game immediately.

United still relied upon an incredible save from De Gea to prevent Barcelona scoring a second, and credit to the goalkeeper, but this was a real team performance, and one which will live long in the memory.
