Senne Lammens has now followed in the footsteps of the two aforementioned United legends by becoming the Red Devils’ current No 1 at Old Trafford.

Van der Sar, who retired from professional football in 2011, lifted four Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and two League Cups at United.

De Gea, who left Old Trafford in 2023 and signed for Fiorentina in 2024, captured a Premier League trophy, a Europa League title, an FA Cup and two League Cups.

Edwin van der Sar vs David de Gea: Senne Lammens explains his true feelings on the two Man Utd legends

Senne Lammens insisted that David de Gea’s rise as one of the best shot-stoppers in the world made it impossible to ignore watching the Manchester United legend.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, he said: “Growing up, of course, David de Gea was and is still a big goalkeeper in the world, especially those years when he was at his height in this club, so of course you watch him most of the time.”

Lammens, who arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day last September, turned his attention to Edwin van der Sar and talked up watching him under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“But when I was growing up, it was 2008/2009, that was prime United as well, so it was van der Sar in goal then,” he added, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“I don’t really recall one particular save… I think I also can resonate with him more.”

Lammens left his native homeland of Belgium in 2025 and Royal Antwerp sanctioned the sale of the 23-year-old shot-stopper to Man Utd for an initial fee of £18.1m.

The Belgium international singled out United legend Van der Sar and how the 55-year-old Dutchman stood out for him for his presence between the United sticks.

“Our characters are maybe a bit more alike, and just every game he was solid and he was there and he was a rock behind the defence,” Lammens explained.

“That’s also when I always tell some teammates, because you’re at this big club and you have so many good teammates, you also sometimes have to give them the possibility to shine.”

Lammens has made 21 appearances across all competitions in his debut season at Old Trafford and the ex-Royal Antwerp ace has kept four clean sheets for United.
