Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay shared an emotionally charged message after he made his debut for Serie A side Napoli on Sunday.

Scott McTominay came through the ranks of the Manchester United youth academy and had been a key first-team player for manager Erik ten Hag.

However, the Red Devils sanctioned the sale of the 27-year-old Scottish midfielder in the summer transfer window for a fee believed to be £25.7m.

Fulham had been heavily linked with McTominay in the summer and had their bids rejected by United, including a £20m offer for the Napoli midfielder.

McTominay left Old Trafford and completed his permanent switch to Napoli on deadline day, with Scotland teammate Billy Gilmour also signing for the club.

Ex-Man Utd star McTominay sends message

Scott McTominay had already made three appearances across all competitions for Manchester United this season before his £25.7m move to Napoli.

The ex-Manchester United star missed the 2-1 Serie A win over Parma at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in August ahead of the September international break.

However, Napoli boss Antonio Conte handed McTominay his debut for the Italian club in his side’s crushing 4-0 win over Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena on Sunday.

McTominay came off the bench in the 74th minute and replaced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for the remainder of the Cagliari match.

Following Napoli’s steamrolling of Cagliari, McTominay took to social media and sent out a heartfelt message after his debut for the Serie A outfit.

“Forza Napoli. Very happy to make my debut!! Well done, guys,” he wrote on Instagram.

Romelu Lukaku, who left Chelsea and completed a permanent move to Napoli in the summer, wasted no time reacting to McTominay’s message on Instagram.

Responding in the comments, the 31-year-old Napoli striker simply wrote: “Scottieeee.”

Conte welcomes McTominay’s arrival

Speaking ahead of the 4-0 win over Cagliari, Antonio Conte was thrilled that Napoli were able to complete the acquisitions of Scotland duo Billy Gilmour and McTominay.

“I can only have a positive view of them,” he said at his press conference on Friday last week, as per Football Italia.

“They are strong players with room for improvement.

“I am happy with them. They have given the highest availability. Frank arrived yesterday but trained very well and will do the same today and tomorrow.”
