Scott McTominay has had a strange time recently with Manchester United.
Back in the summer transfer window, it seemed destined that the Scotsman was set to leave Manchester United.
The academy graduate was hot on the radar of West Ham, but the deal fell through. Erik ten Hag will be glad of this, with Scott McTominay now definitely a name in and among the starting XI for the first-team squad.
McTominay has been with the club since a young boy and has seen many managers go by. None more influential than Sir Alex Ferguson.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s effect on Scott McTominay
In his first-ever podcast appearance, the 27-year-old sat down with Jake Humphries on the ‘High-Performance Podcast‘ to discuss all things Manchester United.
They began by discussing the Scotsman’s early years at Carrington, where they got onto the topic of Sir Alex. Humphries asked him how influential he was on a young Scott, to which he replied:
“He had a really good relationship with the academy and whenever he agreed to keep me on as a scholar and eventually give me my professional contract, we got invited into Sir Alex’s dressing room before the game. My mum and dad were there and we got a beautiful photograph with him,” McTominay begins.
“Then he showed us all around the dressing room and we met the players before the game against Fulham and went up and sat in the box. He didn’t have to do that.
“That was one of the things that was a real touch of class that we look back on and go you know what that inspired me. I went home that day and thought, I want to be like that. I want to be in that first-team dressing room one day.”
Sir Alex Ferguson’s influence is unmatched
Ferguson, as with many players in the past, was the catalyst for the midfielder’s desire to play for Manchester United‘s first team one day.
As a fellow Scotsman, he probably had a huge influence on McTominay and his family’s lives, and that day was the day that secured his dream.
It shows what good man management can do with young talents. Fergie was the best at it.
