Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has waxed lyrical about an “absolute legend of football” after settling into life at Serie A side Napoli in Italy.

Scott McTominay came through the Manchester United youth academy and was an important first-team player at Old Trafford before his summer exit.

The 27-year-old former United star made 255 appearances for the Red Devils and he scored 29 times and registered eight assists for the Premier League club.

McTominay completed a £25.7m move to Napoli back in August, despite former United manager Erik ten Hag wanting to keep the Scotsman at Old Trafford.

However, the Scotland midfielder would likely have seen his playing time limited at United in the 2024-25 campaign after the signing of Manuel Ugarte on deadline day.

Napoli star McTominay on football icon

Scott McTominay has made 10 appearances for Napoli across all competitions in the current campaign and the Scot has netted twice and picked up two assists.

The former Manchester United player has made nine appearances in Serie A since his summer move, with McTominay starting eight times for Napoli in the league.

McTominay is currently away from the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium after he was called up for international duty with Scotland in the November break.

The Scotland international has opened up about his admiration for Argentine icon Diego Maradona, who is widely considered one of the best players of all time.

Diego Maradona, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 60, is widely admired in the city of Naples after his spell with Napoli in the 1980s and early 1990s.

“He is obviously the most iconic footballer to ever walk and play the game,” he said, as The Times.

“When I first walked into the stadium it was a surreal feeling knowing he is an icon, an absolute legend of football. He is heavily in our hearts in Naples.”

McTominay on life in Italy after Napoli transfer

Scotland resume their Nations League campaign on Friday against Croatia at Hampden Park in Glasgow before travelling away to face Poland on 18th November.

Steve Clarke’s men are currently bottom of League A Group 1 and are currently winless in their four-match run in the Nations League so far.

McTominay admitted it is “not easy going abroad” after his move to Napoli in the summer, but the former United midfielder has adapted to life in Italy.

“I’ve got great people around me who help me so much and the stress in my life is very minimal because I’ve got a really good family, amazing friends and I have a lovely girlfriend who do so much for me,” he said.

“I’m very grateful for them. It’s not easy going abroad and having to settle in but it’s been quite seamless to be fair in terms of how much the Italian people have helped me settle into my house and whatever.

“Things I need, like a car or a taxi or anything like that. So, yeah, I’m very grateful to them.”
