Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay attempted to construct the ‘perfect’ footballer using six players and named two of his former teammates in his build.

McTominay remained at United this season after he was linked with a move away last summer, with a £30m bid from West Ham being rejected at the time.

The 27-year-old United star, who is under contract until 2025, remains a key part of Erik ten Hag’s squad and McTominay has been battling for regular playing time.

McTominay has scored six times for United in 24 appearances across all competitions this season, with the Scotland midfielder impressing with his goalscoring output.

The Scotland international has made 12 Premier League starts in 18 matches for United this season and McTominay has found the back of the net five times.

However, McTominay has come under fire from United fans over some of his performances, including his display against Wigan in the FA Cup last week.

McTominay builds the ultimate player

Speaking to Goal, McTominay was asked to build the perfect footballer and had to pick players for six different areas.

The United midfielder chose Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi for the player’s left foot and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo for the player’s right foot.

Ronaldo played alongside McTominay during his second spell at Old Trafford, with the 38-year-old Portuguese forward leaving United in 2022.

When it came to his perfect player’s speed, McTominay chose none other than Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe due to his blistering pace.

McTominay opted for another one of his former United teammates when it came to strength, with Romelu Lukaku getting the nod from the Scotsman.

Lukaku, who is currently on loan at Roma from Chelsea, was brought to Old Trafford in 2017 by ex-United manager Jose Mourinho and spent two seasons at the club.

The 30-year-old Belgium striker played under former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before he left the Red Devils and signed for Inter Milan in 2019.

McTominay completed his perfect player by picking ex-Barcelona and PSG star Neymar for skills and AC Milan and Juventus legend Andrea Pirlo for football IQ.

McTominay to remain at United?

Ten Hag seems clear that he wants to keep McTominay at United for the foreseeable future and is able to call on the Scot where and when he needs him.

It remains unclear if McTominay could be moved on from Old Trafford at the end of the season, especially after the interest he attracted in the 2023 summer window.

However, the United midfielder is keen to fight for his place in the starting XI and has proved useful at times for Ten Hag this season.

Outside of his goalscoring output, however, United fans are keen to see McTominay offer more from midfield and put in more of a commanding presence in his role.
