Manchester United could soon be looking for an Ander Herrera replacement. Look no further than Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
The Times reports he is at the top of United’s wanted list and is keen on a move to England.
Niguez, 24, has been a key player for Atletico, coming through the academy to establish himself as a regular.
The Spaniard has five goals this season and one assist, and shares many of the same combative traits with Herrera.
His ability to help control matches is better, and he ranks in the top 10 in La Liga in tackles won per game, at 2.5 per match, with Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets recording 2.6.

Top class… and costly

The Mail report how in Spain he is compared to Bryan Robson for his box to box ability.
He has been on United’s radar for years, but the report states how he has clashed with manager Diego Simeone, who wants to play him as an outright defensive midfielder.
Niguez has a release clause of £130 million and a contract until 2026. It is claimed however that Atletico would be prepared to do business at £80 million.

While that’s a costly price, Niguez is a top class player, and a sure bet to be a success.

As a replacement for Ander Herrera, United couldn’t ask for a player better suited.
Perhaps add Adrien Rabiot on a free transfer to compete with Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay, and United’s midfield would look immeasurably stronger.
