Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy revealed that one legendary former player was his favourite teammate to play alongside at Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was a fan favourite during his illustrious spell at Old Trafford and the former Manchester United striker was in clinical goalscoring form at the club.

During his five seasons at Old Trafford under ex-United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, Van Nistelrooy scored a remarkable 150 times in 219 appearances for the Red Devils.

The 47-year-old Dutchman, who arrived at United in 2001 from PSV Eindhoven, lifted a Premier League title, an FA Cup and a League Cup during his spell at United.

Van Nistelrooy’s time at United came to an end in 2006 after he completed a move to Real Madrid, with his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson fracturing at the time.

The Netherlands international, who called it time on his playing career in 2012, shared the pitch with a star-studded roster of talent at Old Trafford.

However, one former United teammate stood out above the rest as Van Nistelrooy’s favourite player to play alongside at the Red Devils.

Man Utd legend Van Nistelrooy picked his favourite

Ruud van Nistelrooy played alongside the likes of Manchester United legends Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney while he was at the club.

Paul Scholes admitted that he was a big fan of his link-up play with Van Nistelrooy, with the former United midfielder calling him the best striker he played alongside.

Despite his chemistry with Scholes, United legend Van Nistelrooy revealed that another club legend was his favourite player to play alongside at Old Trafford.

One fan asked the ex-United striker on X, formerly known as Twitter, about his time at the Red Devils and the player he enjoyed being on the pitch with the most.

Responding to the tweet, Van Nistelrooy wrote on X in 2015: “Roy Keane.”

Van Nistelrooy has spoken highly of his relationship with former United captain Roy Keane, who tore into the Dutchman for months over one thing he used to wear.

Roy Keane, who is regarded as one of the best captains of all time, has incredible admiration for Van Nistelrooy and once dropped his biggest compliment on him.

Van Nistelrooy, who has been out of management since his spell at PSV Eindhoven came to an end in 2023, hailed Keane as an “unbelievable” figure at United.

The former PSV boss was in awe at Keane’s role as captain and Van Nistelrooy admitted that the Irishman led United in an “unbelievable way” as skipper.

“For me, he was unbelievable,” Van Nistelrooy said in 2021, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“He was fantastic. He led the team. We all know stories about different players, different stories about him.

“For me, he led the team in an unbelievable way.”
