Former Dutch star Ruud Gullit has expressed that he is not surprised Manchester United were unable to beat FC Twente.

Manchester United’s results this season have been underwhelming so far. In eight games including the Community Shield, the Red Devils have three wins.

Getting off to a good start in the Europa League was ideal. A 1-1 draw against FC Twente continued the pretty unhappy start to the campaign.

Dutch pundit Ruud Gullit told Dutch television, per FC Update that he was not surprised to see the Eredivisie side come away with a point. He said in reference to United: “In terms of football… I’m not shocked, because I see this every week.”

Manchester United coaches agitated

Erik ten Hag is usually quite defensive of his team’s performances after matches. This time around he admitted there was something missing.

Ten Hag told TNT Sports after the game: “Today I have some criticism. It is not only the team, I have to look in the mirror as well. I am part of it.”

These comments reflected what Gullit saw during the game, pointing to how first team coach Ruud van Nistelrooy was a constant presence on the touchline, which he felt reflected United’s poor second half display, with the players needing the extra input.

Gullit said: “As a trainer, you also see things happening that just don’t go well. I also saw Van Nistelrooy constantly in the picture. He wasn’t happy.

“Even Casemiro got involved. You could see that things just aren’t going well.”

Gullit noted Garnacho chat

One moment where Gullit took a little dig at Ten Hag was his comments on the manager’s chat with Alejandro Garnacho before he brought him on.

Gullit said: “”He wanted to have a meeting with Garnacho, but he didn’t feel like it at all. Garnacho was preparing to come on and Ten Hag kept talking to him.

“You can just see it when a player thinks: leave me alone, man.”

Garnacho was United’s first substitute in the 67th minute. Twente equalised soon after and Ten Hag made three more changes to try and get back on track.

United came close to scoring in injury time but could not find the breakthrough and had to settle for a point, which was a much better result for the visitors.
