Donny van de Beek has struggled since moving to Everton on loan in January, even though he has managed a little more game time than he got at Manchester United.
His need to move was clear, but the choice of club has not worked out particularly well, with Everton stuck in a relegation battle.
Everton did manage to win at the weekend against Manchester United, in a game Van de Beek was ineligible for.
Former Dutch international Ruud Gullit was an analyst in the Netherlands for the game, and he felt the Toffees clearly did not miss the loanee, and feels the midfielder made an error with his choice of club.
Gullit told Ziggo Sport, reported by FC Update: “They (Everton) don’t miss (Van de Beek) that much. You can see it in the positions where he comes. He comes to get the ball in his own half. He shouldn’t have it there.
“The annoying thing for Donny is that he made the same mistake as Davy Klaassen. He is going to play for a team that does not play attacking football. Then you have nothing to do with these kind of guys.
“He (Klaassen) prefers to play a little more forward. That is also with Donny. He is very dependent on the team.”
“I think it’s a stupid choice. Maybe he will get through it again under Ten Hag, but you have to be able to play that football. Everton does not have those players, we have seen that by now.”
Manchester United potentially appointing Erik ten Hag would be a lifeline for Van de Beek, having already worked under him at Ajax.
Whether Van de Beek is cut out for the Premier League, we still don’t really know at this point. Everton may be better off without him, for the style of football they are playing right now.
The top alternate offer Van de Beek had on the table was at Crystal Palace, which he spurned for the Toffees, and he may have made an error.
Palace are having a better season, recently beating Arsenal 3-0, playing good football under Patrick Vieira, and Van de Beek may well look back with regret at his decision.
Now despite his troubles so far, he just has to try and finish the season strongly to pick up momentum to take into pre-season with Manchester United upon his return to Carrington.
