Ruben Amorim’s ‘incredulous’ reaction spotted after what he saw from Rasmus Hojlund vs Ipswich

Ruben Amorim conceded that Manchester United are going to have to suffer while they learn his style of play.

It was always a big ask for Manchester United to adapt to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system in just a handful of training sessions, but the future looked bright when Marcus Rashford found the back of the net just 81 seconds in.

However, the Red Devils only took a point away from their trip to Portman Road meaning United now sit 12th in the Premier League table.

There were certainly signs of promise in United’s performance, but consistency continues to be a problem. Two of Amorim’s experiments worked well while others struggled to adapt.

Roy Keane warned Amorim he has a “huge problem” at United when it comes to their attacking play, and the Portuguese head coach often cut a frustrated figure on the touchline of his first match.

One of Amorim’s bold decisions in the confirmed lineup vs Ipswich was that he put his faith in Rashford to lead the line.

Rashford repaid that faith early on by handing Amorim the dream start, but it was noted that Amorim did not celebrate on the sidelines – he knew there was plenty of time left.

His decision not to celebrate was justified as United proceeded to take their foot off the gas and fans grew frustrated at Rashford despite his opening goal.

United lacked creativity after their fast start and Amorim acted by bringing on centre-forward duo Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. However, they both failed to have the desired impact and were unable to fire United back into the lead.

As pointed out by iNews, Amorim repeatedly shouted at his forwards to press, and at one point in the second half, he was “incredulous” after Hojlund failed to close down the goalkeeper.

He continued to wave his team forward but United players struggled to follow his instructions.

Amorim was sympathetic with his players after the Ipswich draw, insisting they “tried” but were “thinking too much” about tactical instructions.

Ultimately, it will take time. It’s a phrase every United fan is aware of by now and supporters know that success will not come overnight.

There were plenty of lessons Amorim learned about his United squad against Ipswich, including their inability to press – something that also frustrated Erik ten Hag.

A handful of players were able to take the instructions on board with Matthijs de Ligt doing exactly as Amorim wanted against Ipswich, but United’s forwards still have a lot to learn – including Hojlund.

If Hojlund is going to play the role that Viktor Gyokeres played in Amorim’s Sporting side, he is going to have to take notes and adapt.
