Ruben Amorim pledges to play ‘different system’ against Tottenham Hotspur, he admires Ange Postecoglou

Manchester United can book a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim is looking to make it three consecutive wins as United’s head coach after his appointment was announced a month ago.

After a rocky start to life at Old Trafford, Amorim enjoyed his biggest win yet at the weekend when Manchester United beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds came from behind against City after conceding from yet another set-piece before late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo sealed an important win.

It was Amorim’s second win over Pep Guardiola this season. His Sporting CP side made light work of City in the Champions League with a 4-1 win ahead of the Portuguese coach’s switch to United.

A lot has been made of Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation since he arrived at United.

With a preference for a back three, we’ve seen several different backlines and United’s first-team is starting to look more organised. It’s clear when you consider how The Reds are conceding fewer chances and goals from open play.

However, Amorim has pledged to switch things up for United’s Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham.

Amorim also told MUTV during a Q&A that he admires Tottenham Hotspur and the work Ange Postecoglu has done.

“I like everything about that team of Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou,” Amorim said. “They have a lot of pace, they play forward, so we’ll try to play in the same way.

“In a different system, but in the same way. So I expect a very good game.”

MUTV presenter Mark O’Sullivan followed up with a question regarding the prospect of an exciting game against Tottenham.

Amorim replied: “Yes, I hope. Sometimes entertaining for the fans is not entertaining for the coaches [laughs]. So what I expect is a strong team for our side and to win the game.”

Chance for United wing-backs to punish Tottenham

Tottenham like to get forward, so Manchester United will need to be as organised defensively as we were in the Manchester derby win on Sunday.

There should be a licence for our wing-backs to get forward to take advantage of Tottenham’s position.

If United aren’t organised defensively, this will backfire significantly.

Noussair Mazraoui is a doubt to face Tottenham, making Diogo Dalot is a guaranteed starter regardless of a drop in form. The Portugal international needs to improve his game in the final third and tonight he has a chance to make a difference against Tottenham.

It remains to be seen who Amorim will select as his wing-back for the opposite flank, but Amad has played there recently, and Antony is another option.
