Darren Fletcher on Ruben Amorim
Darren Fletcher revealed that he has reached out to Ruben Amorim following the Portuguese head coach being sacked.
Fletcher explained that Amorim is yet to respond, which he feels is understandable in the circumstances.
He said: “I’ve reached out to him, I’ve not managed to make contact with him but that’s understandable.
“He’s obviously got a lot on his mind and I’ve been really busy, so I’ve not had a chance to [speak to him].
“I’d love to, because I had a good relationship with Ruben. He was great with me.
“He was very welcoming to me and his staff [were], at the end of last season, in terms of being the under-18s coach, in terms of the small communication I’ve had this year, because I’ve been on the other side of
the building. So always good interactions.”
With Ruben Amorim SACKED, where will Manchester United finish in 2025/26?
Let's see your predictions!
Forever grateful to Ruben Amorim
As a colleague, Ruben Amorim and Darren Fletcher’s relationship was professional and clearly very respectful.
But there is a second element to their respect, because Fletcher watched on as a father as Amorim handed a debut to his son Jack, and called twin-brother Tyler into the matchday squad.
Fletcher explained: “Ultimately he’s the manager who gave my son his debut as well, so as a father I’ve got a lot to thank him for, and Tyler, and although the boys have gone and earned that, ultimately he was the manager that did that so I’ve got a good relationship with Ruben.”
United are in sixth position in the Premier League table, a healthy position on the face of it, but there is a cluster of teams close behind, with Palace 14th four points back.
Speaking about the situation, Fletcher added: “I’m disappointed, obviously for him, but what’s happened has happened I’m here to help the club and we have to move on quickly.”
