Ruben Amorim delivers verdict on Alejandro Garnacho’s performances in Manchester United training this week

Manchester United are back in action once again on Thursday night as Ruben Amorim takes on Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim may have felt like celebrating after Manchester United’s win over Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

There has been no time for relaxation though with United back in action on Thursday night.

The attention turns to the EFL Cup on Thursday night as United travel to take on Tottenham Hotspur.

There is a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs here and a win would take Amorim another step closer to a first trophy as United boss.

Amorim will look to keep the momentum going from Sunday’s win, but whether Alejandro Garnacho features remains to be seen.

Ruben Amorim on Alejandro Garnacho

Amorim axed Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the matchday squad against Manchester City on Sunday.

The pair weren’t even on the bench and questions now surround their futures at Old Trafford.

Rashford has hinted at leaving United in 2025 but Garnacho could be back in the fold against Tottenham.

Amorim has told United’s official website that he thinks Garnacho is a ‘little bit upset’ about being left axed for Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Amorim does though feel that Garnacho has ‘trained really well’ this week and believes that he is ready to come back in against Tottenham.

Whether that mean a starting role or featuring from the bench remains to be seen but Amorim certainly appears to have been impressed with Garnacho’s response at Carrington this week.

“Really good. Trained really well,” said Amorim.

“He seems a little bit upset with me and that is perfect. I was really, really happy because I would do the same and he is ready for this game. So we’ll see in the end of this training,” he added.

Garnacho must adapt at Manchester United

Garnacho has bags of talent and potential, but that will only get you so far.

Amorim wants his players to be the full package – on and off the pitch, in and out of possession.

Garnacho is still only 20 and is learning his trade at the very highest level, but he needs to adapt to the demands of his new manager.

That includes adapting to a new role; Garnacho may need to either slot in as a wing back or attacking midfield player to make himself a key man under Amorim.

Atletico Madrid are keen on Garnacho but we think there is a much bigger chance of him staying than Rashford in 2025 – and the ball is well and truly in his court.

Amorim appears to have been impressed with Garnacho’s response so far but he will be looking for a long-term improvement rather than a swift response which fades away.
