Ruben Amorim has revealed why he made one key decision in Manchester United’s thumping 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The Red Devils were blown out of the water during their visit to St James’ Park and Newcastle comfortably sealed all three Premier League points on the weekend.
Sandro Tonali opened the scoring for Newcastle against Manchester United in the first half before Alejandro Garnacho produced an equaliser ahead of half-time.
However, Newcastle ran riot against United in the second half and Harvey Barnes restored the Magpies’ lead before he completed his brace in the 64th minute.
Bruno Guimaraes ensured the Premier League win for Eddie Howe’s men in the 77th minute after he netted Newcastle’s fourth of the contest against United.
United now languish in 14th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils have only won 10 matches from 32 league fixtures in the 2024-25 campaign.
Ruben Amorim’s men only have six league Premier League matches remaining and the remainder of United’s season hinges on their Europa League campaign.

Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim asked about a big moment during the 4-1 Premier League defeat against Newcastle at St James’ Park
Ruben Amorim made a big tactical change when Manchester United were 2-1 down during the Premier League clash against Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Joshua Zirkzee picked up an injury on Sunday afternoon and United manager Amorim withdrew him and replaced him with Rasmus Hojlund in the 55th minute.
However, Amorim made a further two substitutions at the same time, with Patrick Dorgu replacing Harry Amass and Mason Mount coming on for Alejandro Garnacho.
The 40-year-old ex-Sporting CP boss has now admitted that he was thinking about United’s Europa League tie with Lyon as one of the reasons for the triple change.
“Yes, I was waiting for 60 minutes, more or less, but then with Josh, I was a little bit, not afraid, but trying to avoid any more [injuries],” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
Ruben Amorim remains firm on one other Man Utd decision after Premier League loss to Newcastle
Amorim changed up his Red Devils side on Sunday afternoon only days after United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
The United manager insisted that he did not have any regrets over the side that he choose in the Red Devils’ 4-1 drubbing defeat at the hands of Newcastle.
“No, nothing. Nothing because we did mistakes and they were better,” Amorim said after the match.
“Even if we put a different XI, I don’t know the result. But then we had to make choices as we played three days ago.
“So, you can see with Josh, he was fresh but had some problem. So, sometimes, we need to make choices and then we don’t know the result, even with a different XI.”
United will host French side Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday evening for the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time.
