Ruben Amorim challenges Man Utd star to do better after Ipswich, admits position ‘not the best’ for him

Ruben Amorim has now undergone his second press conference as Manchester United’s head coach with goals a major topic of conversation.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday, Ruben Amorim will be hoping for more attacking quality on Thursday against Bodo/Glimt.

Manchester United’s goalscoring problems however are not limited to Amorim, with Erik ten Hag seeing his side squander countless chances in front of goal.

But this is something Amorim has now addressed, admitting he knows of the problem during his press conference for the Europa League game on Thursday night.

On Wednesday, United held an open training session in which Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire returned to the squad, however, Leny Yoro was absent as he continued his recovery plan.

Now, Amorim has been discussing Marcus Rashford and the attacking group at Carrington.

Ruben Amorim on Marcus Rashford’s position

Speaking with MUTV on Wednesday, Amorim previewed his first game in charge at Old Trafford, but also spoke about things he was not impressed by against Ipswich.

When asked about United’s goalscoring record, Amorim admitted he is slightly worried.

“There is a concern in that but we have to improve as a team. We controlled possession but we were not dangerous. We will try to improve as a team. We need to improve as a team. We can score more goals.”

Continuing, Rashford came up in which Amorim admitted that playing through the middle against Ipswich was not ideal for the United No.10.

“That position is not the best one for him. He was fighting with two giants [vs Ipswich]. We will try to find the right solution for him but he has to be Marcus to return to that [form]. He has to be the first one to want it.

“He will have all the help of all the staff and fans. He is a Manchester United boy.”

Quite rightly, Amorim also called out the rest of the attacking players for their lack of clinical finishing in front of goal.

“Rasmus [Hojlund] and Josh [Joshua Zirkzee] will score more goals. Amad [Diallo] has to be better nearer the goal. Bruno [Fernandes], as well, has to score more goals.”

Where can Rashford play for Manchester United?

So with Amorim’s admission that Rashford is not the best as a striker, his latest run as a No.9 may already be over despite his typical striker’s goal against Ipswich.

This leaves Rashford in a tough situation though, as it is hard to envision him as one of the No.10 inside forward players.

With wing-back almost impossible for a player of Rashford’s work rate and defensive mentality.

However, as Amorim mentioned, a lot of Rashford’s issues are mental rather than his suitability to play up front. If Amorim gets aRashford who is himself again, he may very quickly begin to shine for the Red Devils.

The challenge is made, and now we wait to see if Rashford can accomplish it.
