Ruben Amorim and Ineos told ‘very composed character’ is must-buy player, two Man Utd stars singled out for ‘problems’

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been urged to sign one player who is “setting a precedent for others to follow.”

Ruben Amorim has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford after his Sporting CP exit last November and arrival at Manchester United in 2024.

The 40-year-old United manager replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat after his predecessor was sacked by the Premier League club last October.

Amorim has found success so far in both the Europa League and the FA Cup, with United steadily progressing in both cup competitions during his reign.

However, the former Sporting CP boss has been unable to turn around United’s fortunes in the Premier League, with the Red Devils languishing in 15th place.

Amorim is expected to begin a major overhaul of the United squad that he inherited from Erik ten Hag at the end of the season once the summer transfer window opens.

The Portuguese coach saw his first major signing arrive at Old Trafford earlier this month after United signed wing-back Patrick Dorgu before the January window shut.

Amorim and Ineos sent transfer message

Ruben Amorim has remained firm that Manchester United will commit to playing his tactical system, despite the fragility around the Red Devils’ run of form.

The United manager was well-known for playing a three-man backline at Sporting CP and requiring the need for traditional wing-backs in his formation.

Amorim’s preferred three-man defence has been Harry Maguire as the main central defender, with Lisandro Martinez out on the left and Matthijs de Ligt on the right.

Tony Cascarino now believes that Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe should make a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window.

Speaking in his column for The Times, he said: “He’s [Marc Guehi] a very composed character and you want that from your centre back, and especially your captain.

“As a leader, he’s not the shouty type. He doesn’t look to inspire teammates verbally or by acting out on the pitch, but rather by the way he plays, leading by example and setting a precedent for others to follow.

“Guehi reminds me a bit of Roy Keane in that respect. Keane has a reputation for being a fiery character, but he was Manchester United’s most important player because he was their most consistent performer.

“He always set the standard for how they had to play, and Guehi does this for Palace.”

Cascarino talks Guehi and two Man Utd stars

Marc Guehi is under contract with Crystal Palace until 2026 and the 24-year-old Ivory Coast-born defender has impressed during his time with the Eagles.

The Eagles star’s superb run of form at club level last season earned him a call-up to the England squad for last summer’s Euros and Guehi played a key role for his side.

Cascarino has suggested that Guehi would offer Amorim the perfect left-sided defensive options amid Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw’s “injury problems.”

“Given that Guehi is well suited to playing in a back three, a formation favoured by very few elite managers, the next club he chooses will be very important for his career,” he explained.

“Not that he can’t play in a back four, but the safety a three provides plays to his strengths and protects him a bit.

“If Manchester United and Ineos are serious about the direction they are going in under Ruben Amorim, Guehi is someone they should be looking at.

“Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw’s injury problems have often left them without a natural left-sided centre back and Guehi has already shown he can cope with the demands of that position in the Premier League.”
