When appointed Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim warned it would take time before we saw the best version of his system.
Thursday night saw Manchester United pick up win number one of Ruben Amorim’s reign as head coach, but the style of play still looks far from complete.
This was expected, with the players having to adapt to a new system and style – which differs from how Erik ten Hag was telling them to play for two years.
However, when Amorim first arrived he wanted United to see his ‘idea’ of how football could be played – long before the final product was to be unleashed.
Well, after the game on Thursday, it is safe to say the idea is crystal clear and now data from the game shows it was a performance which broke long-standing club records.

Ruben Amorim broke quadruple record against Bodo/Glimt
The performance against Bodo was a few notches up the ladder better than what we watched against Ipswich. This will be Amorim’s aim, to improve week-on-week, with this season unlikely to have many expectations.
However, the clear identity and style of play are already being implemented at Old Trafford, and this was crystal clear against Bodo with the data telling the full story.
During the game, for the first time on record – since 2003/04 – United completed 700+ passes (723), had 70%+ possession (72.4%), registered 20+ shots (20) and had 40+touches in the opponent’s box (47) in a major European match.
This demonstrates how truly dominant United were in the game which bodes well for the future as the team evolves and becomes more fluid with the system.
Some may argue it was only against Bodo/Glimt, however, United have struggled against far worse sides in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. So it is a positive.
Manchester United have been waiting on these performances
While it was a game we expected United to comfortably win, these are games that have been frustrating to watch for the past few years.
Under Ten Hag, in particular, fans were left having to watch as United struggled against teams like Wigan and Newport this calendar year alone.
So to be so dominant this early in his reign bodes well for how Amorim will get his Red Devils playing once he’s had an appropriate amount of time at the helm.
So this record will be exactly what Amorim would have wanted as it shows he is implementing his style already.
