Things are as rosy as they’ve ever been for Ruben Amorim at Man Utd, but he’s anticipating some uncomfortable conversation with his squad in January.

The dressing room is clearly a happy place to be in right now, having bonded through adversity and now thriving in success.

Ruben Amorim deserves immense credit for not losing the dressing room when results weren’t positive, as do the players for staying professional.

Now, however, Amorim has said that he’s preparing to face a brutal reality with his Man Utd squad in the January window.

A major reason why United have been better this season, even before the results proved it, is that they are playing just one game per week.

After the elimination at the hands of Grimsby in the Carabao Cup, even those few games have been wiped off the calendar.

While Amorim is getting precious training time to expedite the learning process, the byproduct is a frustrated set of players.

With the World Cup on the horizon, players like Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo are in a delicate moment where a poor few months will see them miss out on international football’s biggest stage.

Amorim said in a recent press conference that those are the conversations he’s likely to have in January, as players will ask to leave.

He said: “A lot of things can happen even in our club, and you know that we have the World Cup that is going to be there. Some players who are not playing will ask to leave, so I have to manage everything. Then we want to bring players who we can see a big future for at Manchester United.

“We are not just buying one guy, who we feel in December that we need this kind of player for now. No. In January, the window is open, we can do something.”

Man Utd should explore temporary moves

It is one of those unique situations you never expect to have at Old Trafford, where there just aren’t enough games for everyone to play.

The hope is that this season is a blip, and next season, United will be competing on four fronts once again.

Therefore, with the World Cup on the horizon, United should only explore temporary, six-month arrangements for wantaway players instead of permanent moves.

That way, United can attack the business end of the season with a small and unified squad, and the players who leave can display their form for World Cup selection.

More importantly, their situations can be reassessed in the summer when United would know which European competition they will be in, needing a bigger squad.

A permanent, long-term cull cannot be approved for a problem that will hopefully remain short-term.
