Roy Keane says every Man United signing should have to do one thing after completing move

Manchester United’s recent record in the transfer window has been nothing short of shocking.

The Red Devils have spent well over £1.5bn on new players over the past decade yet have fallen well short of adding to their 13 Premier League titles.

Manchester United have overspent on far too many players that have ended up underperforming, so much so that you can make a full lineup of United’s biggest flops.

In fact, it’s hard to pick many players who have arrived at Old Trafford and justified their transfer fee in recent years.

Thankfully, it seemed United took a step in the right direction in the transfer market under Ineos, who made five major signings during their first summer in charge.

However, Roy Keane believes a tradition previously used by the club should return for new signings made at United.

Keane epitomised the grit and determination of the iconic United side who dominated the Premier League over the 1990s and early 2000s.

United recently put on a massively disappointing performance in the 3-0 loss to Tottenham where players were criticised for lacking energy, passion and drive – something that would never have happened under Keane’s captaincy.

Speaking on The Overlap to fellow United legend Peter Schmeichel, Keane insists that new signings should have to learn the club’s rich history before completing a move to Old Trafford.

Schmeichel said: “You know what he [Martin Edwards] did when I came to do the deal? I was thinking we’d sit down and sort the deal and I’m seeing my agent work and all that.

“No, he took me to the museum. I spent two hours with him in the museum.”

Keane then added: “That’s good. Learn the history of the club, they should do that with every player.

“Dead right. A lot of players don’t know the history of the club, even know. I think it’s a really good idea.

“I was aware of it growing up in Ireland but I think a lot of players don’t know the history of the football club. I think it’s important that.”

Up to Erik ten Hag to set standards at Man United

It goes without saying that Man United have dropped well below the club’s high standards in recent years.

Losing games and having periods without success is bound to happen, but to lose games and be criticised for not trying is unacceptable.

Former United coach Benni McCarthy suggested Ten Hag lacked passion in a recent interview, which is a major concern.

It is down to the Dutchman to fire up his squad and get them ticking. That has not happened this season and now he finds himself on the brink of being sacked.
