Romano says Manchester United will not open contract talks with three players

Manchester United have ‘no intention’ of offering contract extensions to three players whose contracts expire at the end of June, says Fabrizio Romano.

Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani all look set to leave Old Trafford when their contracts expire in three months time.

Despite there still being time to enter contract talks, transfer specialist Romano says that the Red Devils will not ‘open talks’ with the trio.

One player that Romano didn’t mention who is also in a similar situation to the aforementioned trio is Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman has once again used the international break as an opportunity to speak his mind about Manchester United’s plight, and has provided plenty of subtle hints that he is set to depart on a free transfer for the second time in his career.

The quartet’s departure will form part of what could prove to be a substantial overhaul at Old Trafford this summer.

After having any move away from the Theatre of Dreams blocked in January due to Mason Greenwood’s unavailability, Lingard’s return to United after a fruitful loan spell at West Ham hasn’t gone to plan.

The England international didn’t get the chances he expected under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he has remained out of favour under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

With a spot in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup plans very much in Lingard’s thoughts, United’s number 14 will have to pick his next move wisely.

Mata’s one-year extension last summer was baffling and the volume he has been used this season highlights it was nothing more than a sentimental gesture.

The Spaniard’s introduction from the wilderness against Atletico Madrid was nothing more than an act of desperation from Rangnick.

Plagued by fitness and injury issues, Cavani’s second season in Manchester has been a non starter regardless of the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Trimming what is an expensively assembled squad packed with international stars and personalities will be a priority this summer and it seems the Manchester United exodus has already began.
