Manchester United ended Barcelona’s European campaign with a memorable 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Brazilian duo Fred and Antony scored the goals in the second half, cancelling out a first half penalty from Robert Lewandowski.

United are into the Europa League last 16, while Barcelona are now eliminated from a competition for the second time this season.

It was a resilient defensive performance which kept Lewandowski quiet, with Barcelona reliant on a spot kick to score their goal.

Lewandowski reacts

Barcelona striker Lewandowski posted to Instagram after the result. He reflected that Barcelona’s efforts simply were not enough.

The Poland international wrote: “We fought until the last minute but unfortunately it wasn’t enough tonight.

“We are disappointed, but we still have trophies to win this season. Thank you for your support.”

Lewandowski registered only shot shot at goal, from the penalty spot, testament to the superb defensive work from Manchester United’s defenders and the midfield.

The Barcelona striker has scored 15 goals in 19 La Liga games this season, but was kept largely quiet in both matches against Manchester United.

Even though Barcelona edged possession with 57 per cent, Manchester United fully deserved the win, with 12 shots in comparison to the visitors’ six.

The win was a real statement from Erik ten Hag’s United, who will be the team every team wants to avoid right now, in any competition.

It is an amazing turnaround from last season, and everybody involved deserves huge credit.
