Rising star hopes to show Manchester United they were wrong to sell him

Luton Town defender Teden Mengi is keen to prove a point to Manchester United as he returns to his old employers during this weekend’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

If the footballing gods are feeling particularly pesky, then a man who stood out during last week’s valiant 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Kenilworth Road could be about to remind his old employers exactly why he was viewed, not so long ago, as one of the biggest talents rising through the Manchester United ranks.

In fact, if it wasn’t for a series of injuries which ruined his loan spells at Derby County and Birmingham City, Teden Mengi may have been wearing red rather than Luton’s white away kit when Rob Edwards’ side come to town.

Instead, the Carrington graduate will be lining up for the visitors rather than the hosts, Mengi keen to showcase his talents following that summer departure.

‘It will be a special occasion (returning to Old Trafford),” Mengi tells the Daily Mail. “And I want to prove to them and show everyone what I am capable of, and that I can play at this level.”

Mengi, arguably, has already done just that. The Manchester-born 21-year-old was colossal against Liverpool, one of the finest defensive performances across the entirety of the campaign keeping Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and co off the scoresheet.

“It’s good for the confidence that we can cope at this level,” Mengi adds, Luton moving above Bournemouth and out of the relegation zone on goal difference. “And we want to kick on from here.

‘The performance will give us confidence, 100 per cent, going into Manchester United this weekend that we can get a result there. And we will have no fear.

“They have not been in great form of late. Hopefully, we can go there and cause them problems and get a result.”

Mengi is likely to have his hands full again, Rasmus Hojlund desperate for a maiden Premier League goal after netting twice in Europe in midweek.
