Rio Ferdinand has reacted to Manchester United confirming that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach into the 2026/27 campaign.
After a very successful five months, Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as the next permanent head coach.
Carrick is undoubtedly the right choice, with his proven track record for United since January, positioning him as the best available option.
The decision is a popular one, and Rio Ferdinand has now shared his support for the appointment.

Rio Ferdinand shares his reaction as Michael Carrick is appointed Manchester United boss
There are plenty of winners from Carrick becoming permanent, none more so than the man himself.
Now, Ferdinand has spoken on the Rio Reacts YouTube show, hailing the decision to appoint Carrick.
“Huge congratulations to Michael and his backroom staff as well. I think he’s done a remarkable job.
“He’s come in when the club was on its knees, the club was low in confidence, players were on their knees, they didn’t know what direction they were going in. He’s had to rip [Amorim’s] identity away.
“He won a load of games, was phenomenal in that sense, and changed the trajectory of the football club mid-season. From the day he took over, United would be top of the league.
“He’s delivered everything United would have asked for, Michael Carrick delivered, I don’t want to hear any if buts or maybes. There was no other way they could go.”
Ferdinand has put this perfectly. Carrick took the club from a generational low back to Europe’s elite competition, and therefore absolutely deserves this chance.
Now, Ineos needs to back him.

Ashley Young reacts to Carrick getting the job
Ferdinand isn’t the only former teammate of Carrick who has spoken out in approval for the decision.
Ashley Young has taken to X with a tweet directly reacting to the appointment.
“‘It’s hard to believe it’s not Scholes, it’s Carrick, you know.’ ONLY RIGHT AS WELL”, Young said, with a devil emoji.
Young is known to be a big United fan, having captained the club under Jose Mourinho, and his glowing endorsement has similar aspects to Ferdinand, in that Carrick was the clear option.
Another reaction came from Kai Rooney, with the 16-year-old reposting the announcement of Carrick on his Instagram story.
