Rio Ferdinand has one problem with Man Utd potentially reintegrating Marcus Rashford

Rio Ferdinand is sceptical about Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United after failing to convince Barcelona to pay £26m for his signature following a season-long loan.

Barcelona will not sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent deal this summer, for multiple reasons, including a £70m deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

It comes as a huge blow for Rashford as the United loanee made it clear throughout the season that he wanted to remain at Camp Nou.

Now that looks like a distant possibility, former Rio Ferdinand has weighed in on the debate over Rashford returning to United after representing England at the 2026 World Cup.

Rio Ferdinand reacts to potential Marcus Rashford return at Man Utd

Rashford’s future is up in the air right now.

The 28-year-old doesn’t appear to have a future at Old Trafford, regardless of what Michael Carrick thinks of him as a player, due to the astronomical salary he is earning.

Ultimately, Rashford’s biggest hurdle when finding a new club will be his wage demands. He will need to significantly decrease those if he wants to join another big club.

Former United defender has reacted to the news about Rashford’s future, stressing that he felt Barcelona would always play the long game in an attempt to sign the forward on loan for a second season.

When it came to Rashford returning to United, Ferdinand told Rio Reacts via TikTok: “Can he come back to Manchester United? I said a couple of months ago no chance, he ain’t going to come back because of the way it was going at Barcelona but also Man United are going in a new direction.

“That doesn’t include Marcus Rashford. But will there be a scenario where Man United say ‘you know what, hold on a second’, and Michael Carrick says ‘no, I liked what I seen last season. Can we get that back in United shirt?’

“But what signal does that send out to the players. Things can go wrong and don’t work out. At Man United you can go away, rebuild your career a little bit and maybe get back in and come back into the club. Is that the signals Man United want to send out?”

A big summer awaits Rashford and it starts with the World Cup.

When did Marcus Rashford last play for Man Utd?

Rashford made his most recent appearance for United in a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle on December 30, 2024.

Ruben Amorim was the head coach at the time, and Rashford was later sent on a half-season-long loan at Aston Villa.

It remains to be seen if Rashford will have any involvement in United’s pre-season preparations.
