Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has had his say on the reports linking Raheem Sterling with a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United and Chelsea have held talks over a swap deal between Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho, The Telegraph has claimed.

Despite Sancho seemingly patching things up with Ten Hag back in July, the future of the English winger still looks uncertain with just days remaining in the transfer market.

Sancho featured heavily during pre-season, with the Englishman operating as a centre-forward, but he has not been seen in the Premier League during the current campaign.

Sterling, who used to play for Manchester City and Liverpool, would be the first player to play for all three clubs if he did make the move to Old Trafford.

With the transfer window slamming shut in just over 48 hours, it appears that the Red Devils could be about to make a surprise signing in the form of the English winger.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has had his say on the potential swap deal and says two United wingers may have to look over their shoulders.

“What’s all this we’re hearing about Raheem Sterling,” Ferdinand began, “He’s ex-Man City and Liverpool, he’s played for some big clubs. Things haven’t worked out for Raheem at Chelsea.

“If Sancho goes to Chelsea, I think it would work for both players. I think Sterling would be a good addition if he did come. You wonder what this would mean for Antony? I think he’d become fifth choice for United.

“Amad has been playing recently and he may be looking over his shoulder and could be thinking ‘please don’t come’ but competition for places is good. Raheem is someone that certainly has something to prove.”

If Sancho is to leave Old Trafford this summer, then another winger addition would be a smart move for the Red Devils due to the continued struggles of Antony.

Marcus Rashford has had a poor start to the campaign so Sterling could well find himself in a starting role for the Red Devils if he did join.

With Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho on the right, United’s options would begin to look like it was good enough to challenge for major honours.

Sterling has disappointed at Chelsea but most players have been under the inconsistent governance of Todd Boehly. If United could bring the forward’s wages down, then this move would make a lot of sense.
