Manchester United are considering their options over Cristiano Ronaldo, and are waiting for the full interview to emerge before taking action.

Ronaldo left his Manchester United career hanging by a thread due to an explosive interview serialised in The Sun hitting out at the club and manager Erik ten Hag.

We wrote yesterday how United should seek to terminate Ronaldo’s contract assuming there is no buyer. It would also be the most proactive move, taking control and not letting the situation drag on and be impacted by the market.

Now reports are suggest are considering ripping up Ronaldo’s deal, The Sun report.

United ready to terminate Ronaldo contract

A report in The Telegraph adds more nuance to the situation, insisting United’s decision to terminate Ronaldo’s deal would only occur on one condition.

This would only happen if Ronaldo does not demand a pay-off to his contract which runs out on June 30, 2023.

The report states: “Sources are adamant this will not involve paying the final six months of his highly-lucrative deal.”

Ronaldo earns close to £500,000 a week, so this would be a staggering amount of money to simply wave goodbye to, and get no return on.

But simply paying up to get rid of Ronaldo might be worth it. The club eventually made a similar decision on Alexis Sanchez, writing off a large sum so he can leave the club early by mutual consent.

The Telegraph add that United do expect Ronaldo would demand a pay-off, which would create a dilemma.

United need to be proactive to try and arrange a sale as quickly as possible, to avoid having to go through the scenario of expensively cancelling his contract.

One way or another this situation needs resolving before the team return for their next match in December – it cannot be allowed to overshadow the second half of the season.
