Rasmus Hojlund celebrated win at Anfield he didn’t play in, he has to take chance for United this time

Manchester United head to Anfield this weekend looking for a first victory at the stadium since 2016.

Scoring a goal away at Liverpool let alone winning a game has been a difficulty for Manchester United in recent seasons.

The last strike United scored at Anfield came via Jesse Lingard in 2018, in a 3-1 defeat that saw Jose Mourinho fired a day later.

Results since have been miserable, including the historically bad 7-0 loss in 2022. However, last season’s 0-0 draw at least saw United claim a point, and it’s a result we would settle for again this time around, following four consecutive defeats.

United came close to snatching winner

Manchester United’s battling 0-0 draw at Anfield last year was a resilient performance in a game that saw Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans lead at the back, while Sofyan Amrabat, Scott McTominay and Kobbie Mainoo starred in midfield.

Last year’s result could have been better too. Rasmus Hojlund was put through in a rare United counter-attack, and directed his shot straight at Alisson.

At the time Hojlund was still looking to score his first ever Premier League goal, and it would have been a special moment had he netted it at Anfield.

He was criticised by Gary Neville at the time, who told Sky Sports: “He’s got real physical strength and capacity, but he’s not a finisher.”

Hojlund has gone on to prove he can score goals in the Premier League – but has lacked consistency. This season he has two in 14 appearances, 10 starts.

Hojlund celebrated one Liverpool loss at Anfield

If Rasmus Hojlund needs inspiration, he need only look to the team who beat Liverpool at Anfield easily late last season, his former side Atalanta.

Hojlund celebrated Atalanta’s 3-0 Europa League victory last season that knocked Jurgen Klopp’s side out of the competition. The Italians went on to win the trophy.

Hojlund missed Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford early this season due to injury, and also was unavailable for the pre-season loss to Arne Slot’s side.

He gets another shot against them this Sunday, and needs to take every single chance he gets.

Manchester United have failed to score a goal in the team’s last three games in all competitions, and the £64 million striker needs to step up.
