Injuries have been the bane of Manchester United’s season and we can only wonder which position we would be in if we had a fully fit squad all year.
Sadly fitness problems are an unwelcome and often unavoidable reality, and it means Manchester United fans must be patient to see the club’s most exciting partnership in action.
While this could be applied to Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba too, the link up we are really keen to see is the Portuguese star playing alongside Marcus Rashford.
Could be electric
United signed Fernandes at the end of January, and it was better late than never. But at this point Rashford was out with a back injury, and may not return this season at all.
Rashford scored 19 goals in the first half of the season and was on course to pass 30. With Fernandes supplying the passes, it’s likely he would have got there a lot quicker.
The young forward was playing the best football of his career prior to his injury and he must be desperate to return to play alongside United’s new midfield maestro.
Rashford is not a player who stands alone up top. He drops deep from out wide and demands the ball. He managed four assists prior to getting injured and will enjoy Fernandes breaking the lines from midfield and joining the attack.
Both are direct players who takes risks, as shown by the way each of them have equal 76 per cent pass completion rates so far this campaign.
Fernandes and Rashford are both United’s highest rated players based on Premier League performances this season according to WhoScored.com, excluding Eric Bailly who has made just one league appearance.
Rashford will make Fernandes better, and vice versa. It will be a partnership worth waiting for.
It may take until late July
There is no guarantee Rashford makes it back this season, and really United would be sensible not to rush his return from a potentially serious back injury.
Potentially if United make the FA Cup final or Europa League final, United may fast-track Rashford’s comeback. He will be desperate to make it.
Otherwise we could be looking at late pre-season, the end of July before the explosive duo play together.
Fernandes will be active with Portugal at Euro 2020 and will return late from the tournament to United’s tour.
So we will have to be patient, and the duo will likely be surrounded by a few new faces by then, but it will be worth the wait.
