Raphael Varane is being linked with a move to Manchester United.
Forgive us for being sceptical, but this feels like it has a hint of Sergio Ramos and Dani Alves about it.
L’Equipe first reported the French international wants out of Real Madrid. ESPN report ‘United are at the front of the queue’.
It’s understandable United are linked. The Red Devils first tried to sign him in 2011, The Mail claimed.
The Telegraph reported last summer that United were willing to pay £100 million for Varane, only to be told that he was not available.
Just last month the Evening Standard reported United ‘dream’ of Varane this summer.
Been here before
Suddenly, just like that, Varane is now angling for a move?
It’s certainly been a topsy turvy few months at Real Madrid, but we aren’t buying the claims that Varane wants out.
If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
United have been used like this in the past. Sergio Ramos and Dani Alves have had high profile flirtations with moves to Old Trafford, only to use ‘interest’ to sign lucrative new contracts.
Real are set for a summer spending spree and it makes sense for Varane to negotiate a new deal to keep his position as a top earner.
With his status as a World Cup winner, he will feel he deserves it.
Clearly if there is a chance United could sign Varane, the Red Devils have to take it.
He would be an outstanding partner for Victor Lindelöf and take United’s defence to the next level.
Just don’t get your hopes up. By May he will probably have penned a new Real Madrid deal and already be off the table.
Keep your expectations real, and if we are pleasantly surprised, so be it.
