Ralf Rangnick recommends Manchester United sign two strikers this summer
Ralf Rangnick has recommended Manchester United add two strikers this summer in the transfer window.
The interim boss was speaking to the club website after Manchester United’s draw against Chelsea.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored United’s goal, and he has now netted eight of the club’s last nine goals.
It’s an impressive record for Ronaldo, but it also highlights that there simply is not enough contribution coming from elsewhere in the squad.
Ronaldo is the only Manchester United player to score into double figures this season, reaching 23 in all competitions.
Back in February, Rangnick told BBC Sport it was ‘obvious’ United needed to sign a striker this summer.
Now he has doubled down, having witnessed the lack of help for 37-year-old Ronaldo.
Rangnick said: “I remember my first 10 games and we had 10 different goalscorers. It is how many opportunities can we create and how many goalscorers. Right now we very much rely on Cristiano, he also showed a good performance when Chelsea were in possession.
“There has to be a focus on bringing in a couple of new strikers for sure.”
It’s unclear of course how tight Rangnick’s definition of a striker may be. He could for instance mean two forward players, like say Antony, Ajax’s strongly linked winger, in addition to a centre-forward.
But there’s no escaping that United need goalscorers, reliable ones, however you define their positions. Two specific strikers certainly would not go amiss.
Edinson Cavani has been a massive disappointment this season, scoring only twice and being injured for the rest of it.
Marcus Rashford has had chances, and only scored five goals. He played last night and did not even attempt a shot, while youngster Anthony Elanga needs time to develop, rather than being depended upon.
Anthony Martial is an afterthought at this point, scoring just two goals for United and Sevilla combined across the season.
United fans may feel a midfielder or two is a bigger priority than striker, and Ronaldo’s form certainly buys some time.
A new full-back or two, even a centre-back, would not go amiss either. Rangnick previously said 10 signings may be needed.
